Typical Work Schedule

Dayshift, Monday through Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm. Some evening hours to attend class. Weekends and nights may be required.

Duties and Responsibilities Essential to the Job of an Electrical Apprentice – including the following and any other duties that may be assigned as needed:

  • Demonstrate complete and thorough knowledge of electrical materials and tools.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of conduit hand bending and wire pulling.
  • Ability to accomplish basic electrical tasks with general supervision.
  • Assist Journeyperson Electricians with tasks and projects.
  • Complete panel, transformer, and motor terminations.
  • Familiarity with controls.
  • Knowledge of reading and drawing blueprints and schematics of same.
  • Ability to layout from field sketches.
  • Familiarity with basic electrical tools of the trade.
  • Ensure that materials, tools, and equipment are maintained in an orderly and safe manner.
  • Familiarity with basic electrical safety procedures.
  • Maintain clean work areas.
  • Communicate with other employees, management, and customers in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Follow instructions, perform the tasks, and job duties required in a timely manner.
  • Comply with all safety requirements.
  • Comply with company policies and procedures.

Educational/Work Experience/Certifications

  • High school degree or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Must complete 2000 hours of on-the-job training in each year of apprenticeship. (Credit given for prior OJT experience in the field is possible.)
  • Must attend minimum of 150 hours of classroom instruction in each year of apprenticeship training and maintain a minimum passing grade of 70. There are four (4) years of apprenticeship. (Credit given for prior schooling in the trade is possible.)

Requirements

Skills/Abilities of Electrical Apprentice 

  • This is a Safety-Sensitive Position; therefore, you must always adhere to all safety requirements.
  • Must maintain a set of personal tools as required by the company apprentice tool list.
  • Positively identify colors of wires.
  • Capable of digging trenches, either by use of hand tools or power equipment.
  • Must use all power tools, saws, threaders, wire tuggers, hydraulic benders, and knockout punches.
  • Operate two-handed tools/equipment, cable cutters, hammer drills, compression tools and jack hammers.
  • Operate company trucks with manual and automatic transmission.
  • Operate and work from mechanical lifts (electric or gas powered).
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Working knowledge of the most current National Electric Code (NEC) and NFPA70E
  • Commitment to company values and the highest level of professional and ethical standards.

Working Conditions of Electrical Apprentice

  • Able to bend, squat, crawl, climb, balance, push, pull and reach overhead.
  • Able to lift, carry, move 50 pounds or more.
  • Able to engage in overhead work for full day assignments.
  • May constantly be moving or standing.
  • Possess good vision (normal or corrected).
  • Able to work in all elements, depending on job location and time of year, including in heat, cold, rain, snow.
  • Able to utilize construction site sanitary facilities (Porta Johns).
  • Must have all required personal tools with you at all times (Waist tool belt, as worn, weighs approximately 30 lbs.).
  • Work from all types of ladders (Step ladders up to 14'; "A" frame ladders; All sizes of extension ladders) and be able to carry, relocate and set up step ladders up to 12’ by yourself.
  • Employee's personal weight and personal tools cannot exceed weight limit of ladder (Class 1, max 250 lbs./ Class 1A, max 300 lbs.).
  • Perform work at various heights, including up to 60' and working from ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, in other high reach situations, and in other work areas, subject to safety requirements.
  • Work in restricted areas, including switchgear and electrical rooms, manholes, utility tunnels, vaults, crawl spaces, attics, and other confined spaces.
  • Work with electricity of various voltages and appreciate the safety requirements related with such activity and work.
  • Wear personal protective equipment at all times; including hard hat, safety vest, glasses, and other specifically required equipment for the situation, work, or task at hand.
  • Repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers.
  • Able to work 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, overtime as required and night shifts.
  • Maintain work area to acceptable safety and housekeeping standards. 

Special Requirements of Electrical Apprentice 

  • Ability to travel to jobsites locally, in-state and out-of-state as business requires; evening and weekend may be required. 
  • Undergo and pass required background checks, drug/alcohol screenings (pre-employment, random, post-accident, and return to work) and physicals.
  • Understands, follows and enforces all established safety, health, quality and Company policies, procedures and recognized practices.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.

 Details of the Electrical Apprentice Program 

  • The apprenticeship Program is a four-year, tuition-based program.
  • Registered apprentices receive on the job training totaling 8,000 hours (2,000 hours per year) in the electrical field in accord with national standards
  • Teh related classroom instruction meets the requirements of 150 hours for ech year of the program.
  • Classes are taught by our skilled instructors at our office locations.
  • Wages are based on a percentage of the company's established journeypersons rate and apprentice receive incremental increase based upon the completion of every 1000 on the job training hours in the program.11
